Norton residents claim landfill waste caused cancers

Two former Norton women have filed suit against Texas Instruments and 10 other companies, claiming they contracted thyroid cancer from contaminants the firms dumped at the Shpack Landfill.

Philadelphia lawyer Aaron Freiwald said he filed the suit on behalf of Sandra Hannan of Foxboro and Cheryl Corbett of Attleboro.

He said radioactive materials and other contaminants have been identified at the landfill. The site is on the federal government's Superfund list for environmental cleanup.

The cleanup has halted for financial reasons, but is scheduled to resume next month.

Freiwald said the women often roamed the landfill site as girls. The landfill is located on the Norton-Attleboro line. The suit in Bristol County Superior Court asks for damages, but Freiwald said an amount has not been determined yet. He said the types of contamination at the site and their sources have largely been determined by previous studies. The suit will attempt to show the connection between the contamination and the cancer, he said.
