Attleboro family heads to bedside of soldier son-in-law
Top Headlines U.S. Army Sgt. James Hackemer of Buffalo, N.Y., lost both legs in a roadside bomb attack in Baghdad. Two other soldiers were also badly hurt. Hackemer is the husband of Alycia Hackemer, an Attleboro High School graduate, and the daughter of Charles and Joanne Bradshaw of Attleboro. Both parents are employed at the high school. Adrian Geoffroy of Attleboro, Alycia's grandfather, said both parents were on their way to their daughter's side in Germany, where she is expecting the couple's second child. Hackemer was being treated at the U.S. military hospital in Landshtul, Germany, but might be flown to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington as early as this weekend, Geoffroy said. Alycia, who joined the Army while still in high school, is a member of the same unit as her husband and had also been scheduled to go to Iraq. However, her pregnancy intervened to defer her participation. The couple also has a 1-year-old daughter, Kaelynn. Alycia's brother, Charles Jr., who recently completed four years of duty in the Marine Corps, traveled to Germany to be with his sister while she awaited her baby, and remains there. Geoffroy said his granddaughter was told that her husband was on patrol when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Hackemer was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. Alycia Hackmer is expected to travel to Washington with her husband. The couple met while they were on duty in Germany in 2006. Both are members of the 230th Military Police Company. The Attleboro schools Clerical Association is collecting contributions toward the Bradshaws' travel expenses.
