Dozens hurt in MBTA train crash

A victim of Tuesday's train accident at Canton Junction is placed into an ambulance. The woman apparently walked away from the scene only to collapse some time later.

Dozens of people were injured this afternoon when a box car loaded with lumber rolled into a stopped MBTA passenger train bound for Stoughton at Canton Junction.

At least two people were seriously hurt, with some of the passengers brought to ambulances on backboards. The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Most of the injured were considered "walking wounded" and some people suffered broken noses caused by them hitting the seet in front o fh

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the Stoughton-bound commuter train’s locomotive was stationary when it was a struck by a CSX freight car that rolled off a branch onto the main line just before 5:30 p.m.

The train was Number 917, which left Boston’s South Station at about 4:40 p.m.

Passengers said conductors rain through the cars telling passengers to prepare for a crash as the box car came rolling into the stopped MBTA train engine. Rescue crews from throughout the region have been called to the scene. At least 20 ambulances were on scene.
Passengers were evacuated from the train and had to walk through woods alongside the track to waiting buses and ambulances. The buses took passengers to the Route 128 station in Westwood and to the Sharon station.

The accident is causing major delays along the Attleboro-Providence line, which runs along the same tracks.

The MBTA is operating shuttle bus service for Attleboro and Providence.

WCVB TV/Channel 5 has video of the situation posted on their site at www.thebostonchannel.com.

The Sun Chronicle has a reporter and photographer at the scene and will continue to update this story as details become available.
