Pharmawater, Part III

PHILADELPHIA _ Traces of 56 human and veterinary pharmaceuticals or their byproducts have been detected in drinking water here. Though U.S. waterways coast to coast are contaminated with residues of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, there's no national strategy to deal with them _ no effective mandates to test, treat, limit or even advise the public.

Meanwhile, two veteran U.S. senators said Monday they plan to hold hearings in response to an Associated Press investigation into the presence of trace amounts of pharmaceuticals in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans.
