ATTLEBORO - State police confiscated OxyContin pills and a small amount of marijuana stashed in cans with false bottoms and arrested two men after a routine traffic stop.
The driver, Robert Branon, 18, of Melrose, was supposed to have been in a substance abuse treatment facility Friday. But instead, was in Attleboro District Court, where he was arraigned on related drug charges.
Because he was wanted on a juvenile court warrant out of Middlesex County, Branon was ordered held in jail without bail. He is also on probation on a suspended jail sentence for charges unrelated to his arrest.
His passenger, Michael Harris, 21, of Saugus, is free on $400 cash bail after pleading innocent to drug possession charges.
The men were arrested around 1:30 p.m. Thursday after Trooper Timothy Ahern stopped Branon on Interstate 95 South in North Attleboro after estimating his speed at about 80 mph.
The pills and marijuana were discovered and seized after the trooper smelled what he thought was marijuana smoke in the car, police said. The drugs allegedly were found inside compartments in cans of Scotch Guard and Red Bull soda, according to court records.
Police also seized $3,500 cash from a bag inside the car, according to court records.
Harris is due back in court June 20. Brandon is due back in court April 18.
They face charges of possession of OxyContin with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana.
Branon faces the same charges, in addition to speeding and a seat belt violation.
