Man faces charges of having stolen, stored furniture items

MANSFIELD - Police recovered more than $16,000 in stolen patio furniture, lighting, bedding and silverware and arrested a 57-year-old man suspected of trucking the goods to a Foxboro storage garage.

Robert P. Baker, who was relocating from Kentucky and living in area hotels and motels, was ordered held in jail on $25,000 cash bail after pleading innocent Friday in Attleboro District Court.

Police said the storage garage at Guardian Storage on Route 1 in Foxboro was so full that a police prisoner transport van was needed to move all of the property to the police station.

Baker, who has been living for the last month with his wife and three children at the Holiday Inn, faces larceny charges.

His lawyer, James Caramanica of Stoneham, said Baker was planning on leasing a residence in Sharon and cooperated with police in the investigation. The expensive teak patio furniture was stolen from Covidien Corp. in the Cabot Business Park off Route 140. Bedding, silverware and lighting were stolen from the Holiday Inn.

Police used video surveillance to trace Baker to his room after a van seen on videotape was linked to his wife. A man on the van resembled Baker, according to police.

Baker was arrested after an investigation by Mansfield detectives Michael Ellsworth and Frank Archer Jr. and Patrolman Roy Bain. Foxboro police Sgt. John Chamberlin assisted.

Judge Gregory L. Phillips agreed to set bail requested by Prosecutor Donna Bentley, citing the defendant's out-of-state criminal record, including fraud and credit card fraud cases. Baker is due back in court April 18.
