FOXBORO - Liquor licensees now must give the police chief advance notice when expecting several hundred people at night or after a major Gillette Stadium event.

Selectmen have approved Chief Edward O'Leary's proposed liquor regulation amendment, Town Manager Andrew Gala said.

The change applies to single events of more than 400 people at one time or multiple gatherings of more than 750 after 6 p.m. on weeknights, 4 p.m. on weekends or after a major stadium event.

The change seeks to help the police chief determine in advance whether a police detail officer should work the event and, if not, whether police shift commanders should get a heads' up.

Getting a liquor license from selectmen qualifies as advance notice. The change applies to all liquor licensees in town, Gala said.

However, police want to hold Route 1 businesses to a higher standard.

A similar proposal on the May 12 annual town meeting agenda calls for businesses hosting any group of 325 people or multiple functions totaling 500 people or more to have to hire at least two paid detail officers.
