GIRLS TENNIS: Freshmen help King Philip debut with win




FRANKLIN - Freshmen Lauren Trudeau and Casey Burks made successful varsity debuts as King Philip defeated Franklin, 4-1, in a Hockomock League match Monday. Trudeau won her No. 3 singles match, losing just three games, while Burks teamed with senior captain Katherine Lehman for a straight set victory at No. 2 doubles. KP meets North Attleboro Wednesday.

Also in the Hockomock League, new coach Amy Cannon had to face defeat in her debut match, the Hornets bowing 3-2 to Canton. Hornet senior Sarah Yeransian fired a shutout in winning her No. 1 singles match. Mansfield entertains Franklin Wednesday.

(1-1) lost all three singles matches in straight sets and bowed 3-2 to Oliver Ames in a Hockomock League match. Brenna Pereira and Jen Lougee won their No. 1 doubles match without losing a game. North takes on King Philip Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the Hockomock, won its season opener, a 4-1 decision over Stoughton. The Black Knights took first singles but didn't get a sniff in any of the other matches, the exception being first doubles, which ended up 6-4 and 6-4. Lauren Fisher (6-0, 6-1) and Sarah Fishman (6-1, 6-2) were dominant for the Warriors at their No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots respectively. Foxboro (1-0) takes on Dedham today.

"They're the real deal," offered coach Paul Perry after his Shamrocks were overtaken 5-0 at Scituate in a non-league match. Scituate won all three singles matches in straight sets, losing just seven games combined. Jessica Nolan and Paige Burlone managed to win eight games at their No. 2 doubles spot for the Shamrocks (2-1). Bishop Feehan returns to action Wednesday against crosstown rival Attleboro. In a South Coast Conference match, (1-1) fell 4-1 to Old Rochester. Vanessa Senecal won her match at No. 2 singles for the Warriors, who meet Dighton-Rehoboth today.

In a Tri-Valley match, began its season by bowing 3-2 at Millis. Kalley Fisk won a pair of 6-4 sets at No. 2 singles matches for the Lancers, while the No. 1 doubles team of Allison Dutcher and Pryia Patel overcame a one-set deficit to win their match.
