BY AMY DeMELIA / SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
NORTH ATTLEBORO - The dog days of spring are officially arriving, as the North Attleboro Animal Shelter will hold its eighth annual Strut Your Mutt walk-a-thon next month.
For the event, walkers are asked to collect pledges from family and friends before arriving at the North Attleboro High School on May 3 to strut around a course with a canine friend. The event, which is sponsored by the Dyer-Lake Charitable Foundation, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and all proceeds will go toward the town's efforts to build a new animal shelter.
The event will be held rain or shine. All pets must be leashed and participants must have proof that rabies vaccinations for their dogs are up to date.
Typically about 200 to 300 people attend to show off their pooches, support a good cause and check out the myriad of booths, which include individuals from a variety of animal rescue leagues.
"We're going to have a few more demonstrations this year, including ones on clicker training and pet first aid," said Karen Fontneau, the town's animal control officer.
From 10 to 10:30 a.m., Leah Snow will offer the demonstration on clicker training and pet first aid. From 11 to 11:30 a.m., Marla Isaac of the New England Raptor and Reptile Center will be on hand with a few of her favorite critters.
From 11:30 to 12:30, walkers and their pets will be able to participate in contests, with prizes awarded for best trick, best kisser, cutest, best costume, best wagging tail and best bark.
Prizes will be raffled off as well.
