NORTON - Plans for a warm cup of tea led to a smoky fire in an elderly woman's apartment on Route 123 Sunday night.
The fire in the Norton Housing for the Elderly complex at 120 West Main St. caused $2,000 damage, including destroying an electric tea warmer, fire officials said Monday.
The oven must be replaced as well.
The woman had left the teapot on the stove, but she turned on the wrong burner.
She was in another room when the fire alarm sounded shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.
She then threw water on the fire.
The fire was out when firefighters arrived.
However, smoke had to be ventilated from the residence.
