SOFTBALL: 13th inning proves lucky for Bombardiers

ATTLEBORO - Thirteen innings and nearly four hours worth of softball was all Attleboro High needed to chalk up its first Old Colony League victory of the season Monday.

The Blue Bombardiers scored twice in the bottom half of the 13th for a 7-6 win over Barnstable, Devin Azulay going the distance on the mound and delivering the game-winning single.

Sarah Cheney started the Attleboro rally in the bottom of the 13th with a leadoff walk. Ashley Sanford reached on a bunt single then Hannah Quinn walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to right by Vanessa Alvarez plated Cheney with the tying run, then Azulay scorched a single into left to deliver the winning run.

Attleboro had a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh, only to see Barnstable tie it to force extras. The Red Raiders had a couple of chances to win it earlier in extra innings but had two runners thrown out at the plate, Alvarez gunning down a runner with a nice play in right field, Sanford applying the tag.

Sanford also went 4-for-5 at the plate.

Attleboro (1-0 OCL, 1-2) travels to Taunton Thursday.
