Facebook is taking over

For all Internet users, it may be time to forget MySpace. With nearly 25 million members, Facebook is becoming the Web site or choice for communicating with friends, family, and co-workers.

Launched in Cambridge, this trendy site was founded by Marc Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz in the winter of 2004. Initially, the idea was to get college students together, but the high school edition was launched a year later in 2005.

After making a profile, users can join the network of their school, upload pictures, make comments on their friend's page, and much more.

"The thing I like most about Facebook is that I can keep in touch easier with my friends who are in college. All I have to do is search their name and I find their page right away," said senior Attleboro High School senior Lisa Moniz.

Although Facebook is geared toward older teens and college students, there is still a great amount of privacy, making the site safer to use. Everyone has a blocked profile to people of other networks, and it is a requirement to befriend them before either can view each other's page.

"I like how my profile is private to people I don't know. Sometimes random people request to be my friend and all I have to do is deny them and they can't find out anything about me, or see my pictures," said AHS junior Jenna Costa.

Along with its main communication features, Facebook has applications that can be downloaded by each user to do even more things with their page. Horoscopes, bumper stickers, quizzes, and games are just some of the applications offered.

Some may say that Facebook is ridiculous, but others who love having that constant connection with friends say it's fun and actually addicting.

"I think I can truly admit I'm addicted to Facebook. I like it better than MySpace because there's so much to do. I love sending my friends bumper stickers and writing little things on their wall," said AHS senior Hannah Quinn.

"I usually get a chance to check my Facebook every day. Basically all of my friends have one, so I talk to everyone on there," said AHS senior Ali Kruja.

"With nearly 20 million users and 30 billion page views in a month, Facebook remains one of the top sites on the Web. The largest network on the site is Toronto with more than 600,000 users, and 1.7 billion photos are housed on Facebook, according to the Facebook Information Center.
