Non-toxic powder brings firefighters to Mansfield Holiday Inn

MANSFIELD - A worker at a local hotel reportedly became ill while cleaning an unknown white, powdery substance on the second floor of the facility on Saturday. The substance was determined to not be toxic. However, guests in 10 rooms were asked to remain in their rooms until the powder was tested.

Firefighters responded to the Holiday Inn at 31 Hampshire St. around 8:20 a.m., Saturday when a worker reported feeling ill while attempting to clean a white-powdery substance found on a hallway door on the second floor of the three-story structure that holds 202 rooms.

Fire Lt. William Burgess said the employee reported feeling ill and nauseous after coming into contact with the substance. The area where the substance was found was near two second-floor corridors with 30 rooms, 10 of which had guests.

The first firefighters on the scene requested a Tier-1 Hazardous Material response, which summoned eight members of the regional Haz-Mat team to respond to the hotel.

About an hour and a half after the substance was found, the substance was found not to be toxic, and the hotel guests were allowed to leave their rooms. The powdery substance was found to be an unknown, non-toxic powder.

Police officials said the incident was under investigation.
