Appraisal Day aids library

Dorothy Conroy of North Attleboro has a hand-painted Limoge vase, made about 1896, appraised during Saturday’s Appraisal Day held by the Friends of the Richards Memorial Library in North Attleboro at the Masonic Hall. NORTH ATTLEBORO - How can you put a price on a family heirloom?

Well, by having it professionally appraised, of course.

And that's just what 160 people did Saturday at the Friends of the Richards Memorial Library's first-ever "Appraisal Day in North Attleboro."

"We're absolutely gratified by the response," said Sam McLanahan, a board trustee. "It's going to end up a very successful fundraiser."

For a fee of $25, people were invited to bring up to three items that were examined by appraisers from Skinner Inc. of Boston.
The event sold out, and the Friends had to cap the ticket sales by 12:30 p.m. during the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. fundraiser held at the Masonic Hall.

"We had no idea how many would come," said board President Judith Lewis.

"You put the word out and hope, but you never know."

Organizers said there were a few stand-out items, including 3-foot oriental vase that was valued at "tens of thousands of dollars" and a folding step ladder.

Most items were vases, paintings, family heirloom figurines and photographs.

"There has been just an incredible range of stuff," McLanahan said. "And a lot of people telling interesting stories."

McLanahan brought in a 17th century spoon mold that contained a pewter spoon made from it.

The mold, he said, belonged to one of his great-great-great grandfathers.

"It's been passed down through five or six generations," he said.

However, the appraiser was unable to give McLanahan an estimate.
"But, he's going to do some research," he said.
