GOBIS: A void in Feehan's hall




It has been better than two decades since she was swatting tennis balls across the net for winners on the tennis courts at Bishop Feehan High School, the first and one of the foremost of the great stable of Shamrocks that coach Anne Carroll nurtured in representing the school with the utmost display of courageousness, competitiveness and sportsmanship.

And yet, Diane Ison (class of 1987) has not been inducted into the Shamrocks' Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ison was the Shamrocks' No. 1 singles player for four years and went on to play at both singles and doubles at Boston University. Ison, now based in Belgium, became the first of the many Bishop Feehan greats (Kristin Brooks, Danielle Rautenberg, Beth Oliveira, Jennifer Jackson to name but a few) to go on to play collegiately.

Bishop Feehan will be inducting another one of those tennis greats, Jackie Dooley (class of 1989, via Seton Hall University) into the Shamrock Shrine on May 9 ...

Norton High junior Sean Ryan has been knocking the cover off the baseball, batting in the leadoff spot for the Lancers, owning a near .600 average through seven games and having scored 18 runs. "He has unbelievable speed, but he's just been crushing the ball," said Lancer coach Dave Mollica ... "We stand a chance to win every game, but that being said, we stand a chance to lose every game," said North Attleboro High baseball coach Paul Sullivan of his surprising Rocketeers. "We're not great at any one thing, but there's nothing that we're bad at." ...

"It's routine plays too, which is very frustrating," said King Philip High baseball coach Ed Moran of the rash of errors committed by his Warriors, at least one in all but one game thus far. "That's definitely a point of interest for us." ...

Former North Attleboro High football standout Robbie Vaughn a sophomore starting in the defensive secondary for the UConn football team, had nine tackles in the Huskies' spring intrasquad scrimmage last weekend ...

"He's always been fast, but now he has a good base and is so versatile, running anything from the 400 to the two mile," said Mansfield High boys' track coach Julie Collins of Hornet junior Pat Grimes, who has added luster to the Hornets' galaxy of stars ...

At the breakup dinner for Tim Kelly's North Attleboro High swimming team, Maddie Hebert and Tierney Richardson received the MacDonald Award, Margaret Sullivan and Andrew Scanlon received the Coaches Award, while captains-elect for the 2008-09 team will be Josh Keane, Sylvia Serafin and Shannon Moore ...

Norton High junior trackster Jackie Nash is not only unbeaten in the 800 meter run for the Lancers this season, she is doing so by running the event right after she competes in the mile run, "a phenomenal feat," said coach Kent Taylor ...

Mansfield High swimmer Erica DeMunbrun, representing the Tsunami Swim Club of North Attleboro, competed in the National YMCA Championship Meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., gaining All-America honors in the 100 butterfly ...

"It's going to be 3-2 either way," related Mansfield High boys' tennis coach Dan Etter of the Hockomock League showdown match Monday between unbeaten King Philip and 20-time Hockomock League and seven-time state champion Sharon - now coached by current Bishop Feehan High boys' basketball coach Matt Freeman. Mansfield lost 4-1 to KP and 5-0 to Sharon. "His (Freeman's) doubles kids are far superior, so it'll come down to singles," said Etter ...

Gary Miller, the Seekonk High softball coach, has installed senior Chelsea Correia atop the Warrior batting order, not just because she is a left-hander and bunts exceptionally well, but because "she does a lot of different things because she is such a good hitter." ...

Former Foxboro High flash Holly Heinricher, a sophomore at UMass-Amherst, was a member of the Minutemen's 4x100 relay team which qualified for the ECAC Championship by clocking a 47.49 time at Princeton's Ellis Invitational ... "She doesn't play like a freshman," said King Philip High girls' lacrosse coach Mike Vitelli of rookie midfielder Sarah Biron, who has been averaging three goals a match and sharing the faceoff duties with Kendall Harty ...

"That's what I like about them, they're both seniors, they're both good athletes and good friends and they get to a lot of balls," beamed Mansfield High boys' tennis coach Dan Etter of his No. 2 Hornet tandem, Ryan Chambers and Jeff Ivas ...

Attleboro's Michaela Lynch pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks for the Newbury College softball team (8-18) against Mass. Maritime. When she's not pitching, she's stationed at third base ...

Mike Kern of Norton, who attends Southeastern Regional, produced a personal-best javelin throw of 122 feet, 7 inches at Saturday's Mayflower League Freshman-Sophomore meet

"I knew that it'd be a struggle, even though we had pitching, we had so many kids up from the JVs," said Mansfield High baseball coach Tim Graham of his Hornets, who have lost six games ...

Katie Puccio of North Attleboro, a freshman catcher for the Nobles & Greenough School softball team, had three hits in a win over Brooks Academy ...

At the New England PGA Pro-Pro Golf Tournament at the International GC in Bolton, North Attleboro High girls' hoop coach John DelBonis, the pro at the Quidnessett CC in North Kingstown, R.I., teamed with Chris Carter of Hillview for a third-place finish ...
