Attleboro Police Chief Richard Pierce is reminding residents that May 11 through May 17 is National Police Week.
In addition, May 15 has been designated Peace Officers' Memorial Day in honor of law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. Numerous events and ceremonies are held in Washington, D.C., during the week at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial honors all of America's federal, state and local officers. Inscribed on the Memorial's blue-gray marble walls are the names of more than 18,200 men and women who have been killed in the line of duty.
This year an additional 358 names were added to the memorial wall.
Two Attleboro police officers have their names engraved on the memorial wall: Patrolman Edward E. Gobin, who was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 20, 1932, and Patrolman Charles V. Sciolto, who was killed in the line of duty on May 31, 1968.
