ATTLEBORO - A North Attleboro man was convicted Tuesday of domestic assault and battery and was sentenced to a maximum 2 1/2 years in jail.
Leonard Szerlong, 38, formerly of Norwood, was found guilty by a jury of five women and a man after a two-day trial in Attleboro District Court.
The jury acquitted Szerlong of assault by means of a dangerous weapon.
Judge Gregory L. Phillips rejected a defense motion to stay sentencing, pending an appeal, and gave Szerlong more committed time than was requested by the prosecution.
Prosecutor Jessica Lennon had requested Szerlong serve two years of a 2 1/2-year sentence. She wanted the balance suspended with probation and requirements that Szerlong obtain batterer's counseling and submit to drug and alcohol tests.
Lennon noted Szerlong had a criminal record and a history of violence.
The victim in the incident declined to testify against Szerlong and married him while the case was pending. The incident was reported to police by the victim's sister Dec. 19, a week after the incident.
The case was investigated by detectives John Reilly, Daniel Arrighi, Michael Elliott and Lt. David Dawes and Patrolman Scott Weiner.
