NAHS students meet rights activist
BY AMY DeMELIA SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
Students from North Attleboro High School recently had the opportunity to touch history when they visited the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies at URI to meet with Bernard LaFayette Jr.
LaFayette is a civil rights activist who co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, rode with the Freedom Riders and worked closely with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He currently is a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the University of Rhode Island.
This trip was the culmination of studies on school segregation by history teacher Edward Shockro and Student Coalition Against Racism advisor Susan Caldwell.
A previous trip to the Kennedy Library in Boston provided background information and insight into the Kennedy administration's role in the civil rights movement.
Here's a chance to have a little fun and support a great cause.
The third annual AJ Brown Family Fun Day, featuring games, music, arts and crafts and more will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at North Attleboro Middle School. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Early Learning Center's boundless playground project.
