City's Volunteer Day deadline April 7

ATTLEBORO - An April 7 deadline has been set for applications from human service agencies and other non-profit organizations wishing to participate in this year's Volunteer Day celebration.

Presented as an annual "thank you" to volunteers serving numerous local service agencies, Volunteer Day will take place Wednesday, April 30. Festivities will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Attleboro City Hall, followed by a luncheon at the Attleboro Elks Hall.

The event is being co-sponsored by Sturdy Memorial Hospital and the Area Community Council, a consortium of area service agencies and individuals. Submissions of applications should be made to: Volunteer and Student Services, Sturdy Memorial Hospital, 211 Park St., Attleboro, MA 02703.

Mansfield Women of Today to meet March 26 MANSFIELD - The Mansfield Women of Today will hold their annual membership night on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Mansfield Public Library meeting room at 255 Hope Street. Local women are invited to learn more about the group and also listen to guest speaker and scrapbook instructor Susan Murphy, of Michael's at Mansfield Crossing.

The Mansfield Women of Today have been part of the Mansfield community since 1983. The organization provides members with the opportunity to serve their community and meet a diverse group of dynamic women. For more information, call Eileen Murray at 508-339-2921.

City Round Table
to meet Tuesday

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro Round Table will hold its next meeting on March 18 at the Sweet House, corner of Bank and Peck streets at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. The hospitality committee, with Betty Sargeant as chairwoman, consists of Gerda Baker, Barbara Meyer, Marion Nason and Gloria Head.

The club will entertain the Lincoln Circle of the Blind as its guests for lunch, with entertainment provided by Vic Narciso on the accordion and a sing-along. If anyone is interested in joining the Round Table, call Marion Nason at 508-222-3816.

Markman elects slate of officers for new year

ATTLEBORO - The board of directors of Markman Children's Programs held its 2008 annual meeting and election of officers recently and re-elected Lynne Mendes, a teacher in the Attleboro School Department as president. Martin Mansfield, an outside sales representative for Hilco, was re-elected as vice president. Kathleen Egan, who is an accounting manager for EMS, was re-elected treasurer.

Patricia Mackill-Mansfield, a dental hygienist in Attleboro, and Beth Stromberg, a teacher in the Attleboro School Department, were elected co-secretaries, and Deborah Foley, an engineer for Verizon, was elected fundraising chairwoman. Paul Leveilee, a vice president of Sovereign Bank, was welcomed as a new member of the board of directors.

Hear music from bygone era at library ATTLEBORO - John Root will perform the popular music of the Gaslight Era at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 at the Attleboro Library. Root will show how these easy-to-sing tunes offer insights into the customs and values of those bygone days. The audience will be invited to sing the songs that show the cultural diversity of America in the 1890s and early 1900s.

The program will include "The Sidewalks of New York," "School Days," "Japanese Sandman," and "Too, Raa, Loo, Raa Lay."

Camp Finberg hosts five open houses

NORTON - Five open houses will be held at the Attleboro YMCA's day camp, Camp Finberg, located on Route 123.

Dates are Saturdays, March 22, April 19, May 17 and May 31 from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesday, May 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. The public may tour the pool, bath houses and pavilion, new fields and courts, and meet camp staff.

CPR class for health professionals offered

ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital's nursing education department is currently accepting registration for a CPR course for professional health care providers.

The program will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27 in Classroom 303 at the hospital. Cost is $45. Registration is required by calling nursing education at 508-236-7161.

Sturdy holds AARP driver safety course

ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital will sponsor a free driver safety program from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 31 and Friday, April 4 at the hospital.

The two-day program that was developed by the AARP. The classes are taught by trained AARP instructors who assist motorists with their driving skills.

During the class, participants will learn how to refine existing driving skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. Classes will also focus on the effects of aging and medication on driving, how to handle adverse driving conditions, traffic hazards, fuel saving tips and preventive measures that save lives.

Light refreshments will be served. Class size is limited and registration is necessary. To register, call Sturdy's public relations department at 508-236-8020.

CPR course in SA March 29

ATTLEBORO - South Attleboro Knights of Columbus Council 5876 will host a Red Cross CPR course from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Route 123. The cost is $35 per person and reservation deadline is March 22.

Party for children planned by Sturdy

ATTLEBORO - Families with young children are invited to a party from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 29 in celebration of all the babies born each year at Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

Activities will include a magic show, a coloring table, kids crafts, refreshments, books, music and more. Tours of the Hospital's maternity unit will be offered.
