Jazz it up with KP band at Wednesday night show

WRENTHAM - Jazz Night is being held Wednesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. in King Philip Regional High School's auditorium, and a special guest will be performing with the students.

The annual event is a culmination of a year's worth of work, featuring the jazz band of the middle school and the two high school jazz bands.

A guest, international jazz recording artist Greg Abate, will join and play with Jazz I. Abate is a saxophonist, flutist, and composer. In the mid-70s after finishing a four-year program at Berklee College of Music, Abate played lead alto for the Ray Charles Orchestra for two years, and later played with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. He then ventured out, soloing at jazz festivals and clubs around the world. Abate has recorded over a dozen CDs, and was nominated for a Grammy. He is an adjunct professor of Jazz Studies at Rhode Island College and teaches jazz in the U.S. and abroad.

The bands will be performing music of Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich, Charles Mingus, Bob Mintzer as well as others.

Admission: Adults, $8; students and seniors, $5.

A reception will follow.
