City school roofs to get look
BY RICK FOSTER SUN CHRONICLE STAFF
ATTLEBORO - Massachusetts School Building Authority officials plan to tour Attleboro High School this week to inspect roofs that school officials say require attention soon.
The city and the state also appear to have smoothed over ruffled feathers that occurred because of statements concerning what had been portrayed as a communications breakdown between the state agency and local officials.
Comments by Superintendent Pia Durkin, quoted in The Sun Chronicle last week, concerning a lack of information coming from state building officials drew a terse reponse from building authority Executive Director Katherine Craven, who called the perception inaccurate.
Mayor Kevin Dumas, who has been working with Durkin to move forward with renovations and repairs of the high school, said relations have been mended.
"There was a misunderstanding," Dumas said. "We're all on the same page now."
Carrie Sullivan, press secretary for the school building authority, said representatives from the state agency will visit the high school specifically to inspect leaking roofs that school and city officials consider among their top priorities.
Replacement of roofs over the chorus and athletics areas are expected to cost $175,000 and $350,000, respectively.
City officials last year submitted a "statement of interest" concerning the future renovation and construction of the high school building, but the project was placed on "hold" status by state officials.
However, urgent needs, such as the badly leaking roofs, might be considered ahead of less pressing elements.
City officials are anxious to know whether the projects are likely to qualify for partial state reimbursement so as to lessen the burden on the city budget.
