NORTH ATTLEBORO - For the first time, high school juniors and seniors will jointly display their art in a gallery-type setting highlighting their talent.
The Junior/Senior High School Art Show will be held 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, at Grace Episcopal Church.
Fifty to 75 student works will be on display.
Music will be provided by high school instrumentalists, and there will also be a bake sale, said North Attleboro High School art teacher Christopher Flanagan, who is overseeing the show along with fellow art teacher Christina Estey.
There was a show for senior art last year, but it was decided to open up the opportunity to juniors this year, with hopes that it will become an annual event, Flanagan said.
Maria Caudle, a junior, said the idea is a good one because the event now involves more people and a larger display of art.
Her own pieces will include photographs, largely of landscapes, and paintings with a similar theme.
As an artist, "I'm trying to get myself out there," she said of the opportunity to show her work, which has also been on exhibit at the Orpheum Theater in Foxboro in the past.
She's also hoping that the larger event will draw interest from throughout the area.
Chelsea Frucia said as a senior participating in the event, she appreciates that it was opened to juniors as a way to provide guidance for them for next year.
"Going into it as a senior, I didn't have any experience," she said.
Frucia's art will include pencil drawings and paintings involving clocks and puzzles. She has also experimented with portraits. One of her boyfriend will be on display at the show.
Kyle DiMare, a junior, works in acrylics and mixed media. "A lot of it is very conceptual," he said.
Bringing juniors into the mix is a good idea, he said, because it makes the effort more inclusive and will allow the event to grow and improve next year.
Flanagan said the show used to be in the senior hallway in conjunction with other events. A separate venue lets the art department and its students "make their presence known."
"There's a lot of very talented kids," he said. "We wanted to showcase them on their own terms."
