D-Day for Mansfield candidates

MANSFIELD - The hard-fought five-way campaign for the board of selectmen comes to a close today as Mansfield voters head to the polls.

Voters from all six of the town's precincts will cast ballots in the gymnasium at Mansfield High School, 250 East St. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Three of the four offices on the ballot have competitive races. Along with two new selectmen, voters will choose two school committee members and a housing authority commissioner. Town Moderator Robert Saquet is unopposed in his bid for re-election.

The two new selectmen will take their seats at the board's regular meeting Wednesday night.

Town Clerk Helen Christian predicts that about 3,500 residents will show up at the polls, which would be a turnout of about 30 percent. "I really think it's going to be a steady day," she said.

Christian also made a last-minute pitch to wavering would-be voters.

"If you want to make a difference in your community, come on out and vote," she said.

Christian said she expects to announce the results by about 8:45 p.m. The winners of all three races will be posted online tonight at thesunchronicle.com as soon as they are available.
