ATTLEBORO - Joyce Marie (Nameika) Jennings, 58, of Attleboro, died on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a three-month illness. She was the wife of Justin F. Jennings, to whom she was married on Feb. 26, 1978 at St. Ann's Church in Cranston, R.I.
Born in Cranston on April 18, 1950, she was a daughter of Minnie (Soscia) Nameika Capussela of Cranston and the late William Nameika. She was raised and educated in Cranston, where she was a 1969 graduate of Cranston East High School. She earned an associate degree in science in liberal arts from Rhode Island Junior College and a bachelor of science in art education from Rhode Island College.
From 1977 to 1994, she and her husband were the owners and operators of the former Jennings Restaurant in South Attleboro, where together they managed a start-up business that grew from take-out service to a 150-seat establishment. At the restaurant, she was responsible for the control and direction of the day-to-day operations, accounting, marketing, ordering, preparing and all aspects of the general operations.
She then focused her talents and energy on working full time as a watercolor artist. Her creative process began with setting the mood and the color of the time of day in a typical New England scene. After working out an original composition, she would combine the techniques and style to create a unique view of the landmarks and natural beauty of the local area.
For many years, she served as a long-term substitute teacher in the Warwick, R.I. and Cranston school departments, having taught art appreciation and expression. At the Rhode Island School for the Deaf in Providence, Mrs. Jennings taught art to totally and partially blind adults and children and executed successful lessons through touch and feel methods with emotionally sensitive students.
In addition to her formal college art training, other insight came from studies at the Attleboro Museum and studies with various workshops in watercolor. She had studied privately with local artist, Sybil Heerdegen.
She was the recipient of numerous awards for her works in past years. Three works were purchased in 2007 for the Marietta Museum of Art and Whimsy collection.
Mrs. Jennings was a member of the Attleboro Arts Museum, the Newport Museum, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the Wickford Art Association, the Scituate Art Association, the National Art Association, the Mansfield Music and Arts Society and the Massachusetts Arts Society.
She also accepted commissions for custom artwork and transformed personal favorite photographs into priceless watercolors to be cherished by generations of family members. Each year, her artwork was displayed throughout New England at various art shows and exhibits.
Mrs. Jennings and her husband traveled around the world, having visited numerous countries and islands to obtain photographs to be used for her future water coloring endeavors.
