Franklin David Hicks Sr., 72
ATTLEBORO — Franklin David “Frank” Hicks Sr., 72, of County Street, Attleboro; formerly of Pearl Street, Attleboro; died on Monday, April 21, 2008 surrounded by his loving and devoted family at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro following a brief illness. He was the husband of Gail E. (Vose) Hicks, to whom he was married on Feb. 24, 1961 in Burrillville, R.I. and treasured more than 47 years together.
Born in Attleboro on Sept. 13, 1935, he was a son of the late Forrest F. and D. Iola (Cote) Hicks. He was raised and educated in Attleboro where he remained a lifelong resident of the city. He attended Attleboro High School and Johnson & Wales College in Providence.
A proud veteran, he gave many years of service to his beloved country. He began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves on June 21, 1954 until he enlisted on March 15, 1956 in the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge on Feb. 28, 1958. Following his discharge he served with the Massachusetts National Guard from March 1, 1958 until March 16, 1961. Once again he enlisted in the Army National Guard on Sept. 17, 1962 and served until Feb. 12, 1964. Three additional times he enlisted in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharges on Aug. 20, 1977, Aug. 20, 1978 and Aug. 20, 1981. His military service began a family legacy with children and grandchildren proudly serving and protecting our country’s freedom.
Prior to his retirement in 2000, Mr. Hicks was employed as a pantograph operator at Josten’s Inc. in Attleboro for more than 26 years.
Before entering the military, he was employed by L.G. Balfour in Attleboro and had been employed part time at Apco-Mossberg for five years. Many years ago, he worked as a milkman for Bliss Brothers Dairy in Attleboro for nine years.
He practiced martial arts in earlier years and following his retirement found tai chi, the slow, relaxed, circular exercise developed in China, as a form of relaxation. Enrolled in classes at the Attleboro Council on Aging, he soon developed a love for the art form and began as a tai chi instructor, having taught countless other seniors the relaxation method at the center.
Since September 2000, he had been employed by the City of Attleboro as a school crossing guard assigned to the Hyman Fine School in Attleboro.
A longtime car and motorcycle enthusiast, he was a member of the “Dragging Flies” of Attleboro and the National Hot Rod Association.
During his late teen years, he won numerous trophies as a drag car racer.
As an athlete, he was a member of the Josten’s basketball and softball teams while employed by the company, and enjoyed bowling with family and friends for many years in various leagues.
In addition to his volunteer work at the Attleboro Council on Aging, he was a volunteer with the Special Olympics for decades and was a volunteer with the “Plant the Seeds of Kindness” organization.
The constant joker, he enjoyed expressing himself through laughter since a young age. His sense of humor and joking personality will be forever missed by family and friends.
Mr. Hicks was an ardent sports fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.
In addition to his wife of over 47 years, he leaves three sons: F. David Hicks Jr. and his wife Nancy L. (Goff) Hicks of Attleboro, Terence “Terry” L. Hicks of Attleboro, and Thomas “Tom” Hicks of Attleboro; a daughter, Robin E. Simpson and her husband Ricky L. Simpson of Clinton, Tenn.; six grandchildren: Sara M. Phillips of Maynardville, Tenn.; R. Beth Simpson of Clinton, Tenn.; Lance Corporal Thomas W. Simpson, U.S. Marine Corps, of Beaufort, S.C.; Zachary R. Simpson of Clinton, Tenn.; Specialist Franklin David Hicks III, U.S. Army, currently serving in Iraq; and Joseph Michael Boyden-Hicks of Attleboro; two great-grandchildren; an aunt, Iris (Cote) Harris of Attleboro; his mother-in-law, Marion (Going) Vose of North Attleboro, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late F. Dana Hicks, who died in 2004.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visitation with Veteran’s Honors on Friday, April 25, 2008 from 4 to 7:45 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave. (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, ¾ mile on left), Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.
The funeral service with Veteran’s Honors will immediately follow visitation on Friday, April 25 at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave. (exit 5 off I-95 N or S, go right at end of ramp, ¾ mile on left), Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro with Rev. Kenneth Moore, officiating.
Children’s room available during visitation and the funeral service.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend graveside services with full military honors on Wednesday, April 30 at 10 a.m. at Oak Knoll Cemetery, Tremont Street — Route 118, Rehoboth, with the Rev. Kenneth Moore, officiating.
Burial will follow.
Following cemetery services, an invitation will be extended to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments.

Peter Sabatini, 82
NORTON — Peter Mario Joseph Sabatini of Norton, formerly of Norfolk, died Monday, April 21, 2008 at Epoch Senior Living Center of Norton. He was 82.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Benedetto and Antonneta (Zanni) Sabatini.
He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School in Providence, and earned a degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University.
Formerly of Norfolk, he retired in 1992 after 25 years with Raytheon, where he worked as an electrical engineer.
He was an avid golfer and a former communicant of St. Jude’s Church in Norfolk, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
The husband of Alice (Preston) Sabatini, he was the father of Robert Sabatini of Biddeford, Maine; Richard Sabatini of Wrentham; John Sabatini of Wilmington, N.C.; Kathleen Holt and her husband Glen of Pembroke; and Michael Sabatini and his wife Kelli of Camden, Maine; the brother of Benjamin Sabatini of Florida and Theresa Wassel of New Jersey; and is also survived by 13 grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Jude’s Church, 86 Main St., Norfolk.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the R.J. Ross Funeral Home, 135 South St., Wrentham. Burial will be in Norfolk Cemetery.

Jim Naylor, 48
FOXBORO — Jim Naylor, 48, of Foxboro, St. Croix and Brewster, died unexpectedly Monday, April 21, 2008.
Jim is survived by his many friends and was the son of John Naylor of Wrentham and Kaye Naylor of Foxboro.
He is also survived by his sister, Julia Haney; a nephew, Adam; and a niece, Elizabeth.

Ronald Allard, 55
PAWTUCKET — Ronald P. Allard, 55, of Sanford Street, Pawtucket died on Sunday, April 20, 2008 in the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Pawtucket.
He was the husband of Karen (Morse) Allard.
Born in Central Falls, R.I., a son of the late Joseph and Lillian (Pope) Allard, he had been a resident of Pawtucket for two years, and was previously of Seekonk.
He was a machinist in the electronics industry for many years.
During the Vietnam War, he served for two years in the U.S. Army.
He enjoyed camping and fishing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two children, Jennifer Allard and Scott Morse, both of North Attleboro; one brother, Joseph Allard of Pawtucket; and two sisters, Linda Zarski of Pawtucket and LeeAnn Kelley of Henderson, Nev.
He was the father of the late Matthew Allard, and the brother of the late Shirley Boivin.
Visitation hours are Thursday, April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Darlington Mortuary of L. Heroux & Son, 1042 Newport Ave., Pawtucket.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. at the Covenant Congregational Church, 143 Glenwood Ave., Pawtucket.
John Souza, 91
CAPE CORAL, FLA. — John Souza, 91, of Cape Coral, Fla., died on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1917 in Attleboro to the late Rose (Alves) and John Souza.
Mr. Souza was formerly employed as a millwright in the automotive industry who retired from the General Motors Corp. in 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Felicia (Lawrence) Souza of Cape Coral; his children, John Murphy of Reno, Nev. and Carole Jean Andrews of Cape Coral; his grandchildren, Christopher A. Andrews of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Donna Jean Andrews of Attleboro; his siblings, Bella Theodore of North Attleboro, Irene Texiera of Castro Valley, Calif., and Robert Souza of Attleboro; his niece, Patricia Cotterill of Norton; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and interment will be held privately by his family at a later date.
