Jane S. Munroe Poor, 96

Sept. 23, 1911-April 15, 2008

ATTLEBORO - Jane was born in Attleboro on Sept. 23, 1911. She was the only child of Walter and Ada Hodges.

Jane attended and graduated from the Attleboro schools. In 1929, she attended Gorham Normal School in Gorham, Maine, now a part of the University of Maine. She graduated with honors in 1931. Jane taught grade school in the Plat and Washington schools in South Attleboro until 1936. Her activities at that time included president of the Bristol County Christian Endeavor Union, the Ladies Sewing Society at the Second Congregational Church in Attleboro and the president of the South Attleboro PTA.

On Feb. 19, 1936, she married Ralph G. Munroe of Rehoboth, her high school sweetheart. Together, they raised four children.

After being a stay-at-home mom for a few years, Jane went back to teaching. She taught sixth grade at the Palmer River Elementary School in Rehoboth from 1956 until 1972. Meanwhile, she opened and operated the Cricket Hill Gift Shop at home on the Munroe Turkey Farm in Rehoboth. She ran this shop for 30 years until she retired.

In her spare time, Jane was a local reporter for the Attleboro Sun, enjoyed painting classes and the local garden club. She was also a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.

Jane was a member of the Rehoboth Congregational Church, Eastern Star, DAR and a 60-year member of the Anawon Grange.

Many fun summer days were spent at the cottage built by Ralph on West Island in Buzzards Bay.

Ralph passed away on Oct. 9, 1980. A lifelong friend arrived a couple of years later, and on Jan. 2, 1983, Jane and Barney Poor were married. Ralph and Barney were fraternity brothers at the University of Maine. Barney brought Jane back to Horizon House in Seattle, Wash., where they enjoyed living until their passing. Barney and Jane spent many weeks each year on Maui and traveled by cruise ships to many parts of the world.

Jane's husband Barney passed away last December. Surviving family members include three sons: Ralph G. Munroe Jr. of Park Forest, Ill., Robert S. Munroe and his wife Susan of Rehoboth, and Walter H. Munroe and his wife Sharon of Rehoboth; one daughter and her husband, Brian and Elizabeth Koons of Sandy Creek, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Mahoney Koons passed away on July 18, 2007.

Memorial gifts may be given to the American Cancer Society in memory of Jane's daughter, Elizabeth C. Koons. Please call the cancer society at 1-800-227-2345.
