SOFTBALL: D-R wins key SCC showdown

TOM MAGUIRE D-R’s Christy Ulak gets down a sacrifice bunt to move a runner over to second base.

REHOBOTH - The Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High softball team has just one agenda - win.

It may not always be pretty, it may occur in the bottom of the seventh inning or in extra innings, but coach Dave Driscoll and the Falcons are 13-1 overall, 12-0 in the South Coast Conference after managing a 3-2 victory over Apponequet in eight innings Tuesday.

"That's the way that we play," sighed Driscoll, as the Falcons stranded eight baserunners through seven innings, five in scoring position and then yielded the tying run to the Lakers (11-3, 10-2) in the top of the seventh with two outs.

However, D-R leadoff batter Tori Rocha smacked her third hit, an RBI-single to left field to score pinch-runner Amanda Salois, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the game-winning run.

The Falcons began their game-winning rally when Brittany Noons belted her second hit, a single into left field. With two outs, the No. 9 batter in the order, Kyla Jordan singled to the shortstop hole and an error on the play put the Falcon runners at second and third base.

"Tori played with the eye of a tiger, every at bat," said Driscoll as Rocha slammed a triple in the first inning for the Falcons and an RBI-single to centerfield - again with two outs - in the sixth inning for D-R's second go-ahead run.

Unfortunately for D-R pitcher Kyla Puccini, the Falcons did not create enough timely hitting. Puccini allotted the Lakers five hits and one walk, retiring the first 10 Apponequet batters that she faced. "They're a good hitting team and Kyla made them work," said Driscoll.

Apponequet tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth when Mary Ashley stroked a two-out, two-strike RBI-single into centerfield. The Lakers again tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh when D-R dropped a foul popup, committed an infield error with two outs (to load the bases) and hesitated to field a harmless infield roller that produced the second run.

"But, we didn't give up another run with the bases loaded and we found a way to win," said Driscoll. And the Falcons did so because in the eighth inning, Rocha, in centerfield, latched onto a line drive and relayed to Kristy Ulak for a double play.

D-R loaded the bases in the second as Jesslyn Gordon drew a leadoff walk, Noons drew a walk and Jenna Rocha stroked a two-strike single into leftfield. Kyla Jordan's fielder's choice into left field plated the go-ahead run.

D-R regained the lead in the sixth as Noons lead off with a single into left and Sirois, a pinch-runner, scored on the second of Rocha's three hits. D-R returns to action today at Wareham.

King Philip 4, Mansfield 0

PLAINVILLE - Jen Jones tossed a complete-game, seven-hit shutout as the Warriors defeated the Hornets in a Hockomock League game.

Jones struck out four batters and walked one in the game. She was helped out by a double play in the top of the first inning. King Philip had the bases loaded in both the bottom of the first and third innings, but did not score on either occasion.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when King Philip scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Sarah Hedtler. The Warriors took control of the game with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. Anna Kelley accounted for two runs with a two-run double, while Lindsey Messier also added an RBI single to make it 4-0.
King Philip pounded out a total of 12 hits in the game. Hedtler and Casey McCourt both went 3-for-4 with three singles. Jen Robillard also went 2-for-4 with two singles. Jackie McPherson went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles for Mansfield, while Jessica Cooney was 2-for-2 with two singles.

The Warriors, now 15-2 overall and 13-1 in the league, will travel to Oliver Ames for a league contest this afternoon, while the Hornets will travel to Sharon for a league game this afternoon.

Bishop Stang 13,

Bishop Feehan 2

ATTLEBORO - Cary Kaczowka went 2-for-3 with two singles as the Shamrocks fell to the Spartans in a Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Bishop Stang took control of this contest early on, scoring six times in the top of the second inning to open up a 6-0 advantage. The Spartans then added one run in the top of the fourth and three more in the top of the fifth to build a 10-0 lead. Bishop Stang scored one more in the top of the sixth for a 11-0 advantage.

Bishop Feehan got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Morgan Lindberg accounted for both runs with a two-run double. The Spartans concluded the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh. The Shamrocks finished with six hits in the game.

Bishop Feehan, now 6-8 overall and 1-4 in the EAC, will travel to Fall River to face Bishop Connolly in a conference game on Thursday afternoon.
