Mansfield boys, girls win track titles

MIKE GEORGE North Attleboro’s Ashley Plant goes into her windup in the discus competition during Tuesday’s crucial Hockomock League showdown with Mansfield. Plante finished third in the event, but the Hornets captured both meets by slim margins, giving Mansfield a pair of dual meet titles.

NORTH ATTLEBORO - And the Hockomock League dual meet championships for both the boys and girls teams belongs to Mansfield High.

With Matt Callanan winning three events, with Dan Glavin and J.D. Chalifoux each winning two events, the unbeaten (8-0) Hornet boys' team claimed the Hockomock title with a 74-62 victory over previously unbeaten North Attleboro High on the Rocketeers' newly named Dwight Estey Track Tuesday.

With Jessica Eason and Meghan Ferreira each winning two events, the unbeaten (8-0) Hornet girls' team captured the Hockomock crown with a scintillating 70-66 verdict over the previously unbeaten Rocketeers.

"All around there were outstanding performances," related North boys' coach Derek Herber.

"What a great team effort," chimed in Mansfield mentor Julie Collins.

Callanan not only won both the 110 (14.5) and 330 (40.6) hurdles, he won the triple jump, competing in the event for the first t ime at 40-feet, 1-inch. "There's a big weight on his shoulders, but that was a remarkable effort," added Collins of the senior captain's 15 points for the trio of wins.

Glavin, a junior, rewrote his own MHS record with the discus at 162-9 and came back to win the shot put at 53-9, two events in which he was nowhere near close to form while competing at the Hartford Invitational over the past weekend. "We couldn't have him have an off day," said Collins.

And Chalifoux, another junior, was the fleetest of the field in both the 100 (11.2) and 200 (22.9), "he's looking awfully good right now and to win it, he'd have to run very well," added Collins of his 10 points.

North was within 46-44 of the Hornets, but Glavin lead a Hornet sweep of the discus event and the Rocketeers never could venture closer.

Nick Wade won both the 800 (1:59.5) and mile (4:30.4) for the Rocketeers, but in both events Hornet runners were right on his heels. In the 800, Peter Starke (2:02.5) and Chris Harney (2:02.7) were a stride behind and in the mile, Patrick Grimes (4:34) and Mike Bolea (4:35) were with him the entire length.

Phil Tryon (javelin, 166-feet) and Kevin McElwee (high jump, 5-10) came through for first place, while Elijah Harris lead a Rocketeer sweep of the long jump.

"Every event was close - we did our best, but they were a little deeper," said North girls' coach Jason Feid of the Hornets pulling ahead as a result of Eason winning both the shot put and discus events and Ferreira winning both the 100 hurdles and triple jump.

"We needed the relay to pull it out and they were coming off of a 3:58 over the weekend," said Mansfield coach Derek Ellis. "In addition to that and the usual points we get from Meghan Ferreira, we had a few sophomores who had huge personal bests to help us get the win."

Senior captain Kristen McLoughlin nearly willed North to the victory, winning the 200 and 400, while Nicole Matte lead a North sweep of the high jump and Jen Alix lead as Rocketeer sweep of the javelin event. In addition, junior Julieann Cappadona won the 100 (16.5), took second in the 200 and 300 (49.1), while Amanda Parker clocked a 5:39 mile and a 2:31 in the 800, both good for second place.

The difference may have been Mansfield's second-year performers. Sophomores Cassie Olson (mile 5:33.8, first place), Anna Lutkevich (800, 2:30.1, first place) and Eason (discus, 96-feet, first place) delivered outstanding five-point performances. Meanwhile, Colleen Davis, who won the 300 hurdles for the Hornets, anchored the winning 4x400 relay team.

"We knew it was going to be a close one - four points, you can't get much closer than that - but the girls really put it all together," added Ellis.
