BASEBALL: Feehan clinches EAC title

FALL RIVER - Ryan Lee collected three hits and Matt Boulter surrendered just one run through the first six innings as the Bishop Feehan High baseball team clinched the Eastern Athletic Conference championship with a 6-2 victory over Bishop Connolly in a conference game on Thursday afternoon.

In improving to 9-5 overall, 7-1 in the EAC, the Shamrocks supported Boulter with some dandy defense. Boulter aided his own cause by initiating a double play in the second inning, then second baseman Brendan Smith quelled a Cougar seventh inning uprising by initiating a game-ending double play.

The Shamrocks overcame an early one-run deficit by scoring a trio of third inning runs. Brendan Smith and Lucas Gagne drew walks around a Lee base hit. Boulter then hammered a two-run single.

The Shamrocks added another trio of runs in the seventh as Smith again drew a walk, Lee (RBI) and Gagne (RBI) smashed triples and Boulter followed with a run-producing sacrifice flyball.

ATTLEBORO - Errors proved the downfall of the Bombardiers as the Indians scored three unearned runs on the way to the Old Colony League victory.

The Indians tagged AHS starting pitcher Connor Larkin for three runs on three hits in the first inning and then added a pair of runs in the third inning as a result of two walks, an error and a single.

"We had our chances, but we didn't get the big hit and the errors killed us," said AHS coach Matt Bosh, whose Bombardiers have yet to taste victory (0-4) in the Old Colony League race.

The Bombardiers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third as James Kelly spanked a leadoff single and Matt Campbell unleashed an RBI-double into right centerfield.

Dennis Medeiros, the Dartmouth righthanded starting pitcher, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second with a pair of strikeouts - after Jared Linhares and Brent Burns had laced singles to lead off the frame. Then Medeiros left Campbell stranded at second in the third, getting the first two outs on infield ground balls.

The Bombardiers also left runners on first and second in the fifth inning. Kelly was 3-for-4 and Burns 2-for-3 as Attleboro managed seven hits off Medeiros, who struck out six and walked just one.

The Bombardiers (5-9) have a return engagement with Dartmouth on the road 2 p.m. Sunday.
