'Flip It' for a good cause

Are you having trouble dealing with life? Are you frazzled about everything? Stop, relax and "Put Things In Perspective" because there are so many people in this world who are less fortunate then you are.

There is no reason to get stressed out or complain about the little things in life, because when thinking about it, life's often not as awful as it's occasionally made out to be.

Well, that's exactly what "Flip It For Life's" motto is. "Flip It For Life" has the goals of both raising money for cancer research and changing people's attitudes towards life at the same time.

"Flip It" was started on Feb. 19, 2008 by Mark Halloway and his girlfriend Lauren Rappoport, but it was in September 2006 when he came up with the idea after his sister, Robin Hansen, was diagnosed with leukemia, which is cancer of the blood or bone marrow.

Although Hansen has leukemia, she still has a positive attitude toward life, and her appreciation for life and how to live it is still strong. Her attitude toward life was what inspired Halloway to start "Flip It For Life." "'Flip It For Life' suggests that we flip our attitudes, but at the same time it also expresses that we're doing this for a reason. 'For Life,' to us, means finding cures or at least helping cancer research out as much as we can," said Halloway.

"Flip It For Life's" logo is "Frazzle," (meaning stress) who is shown as a stick figure, throwing up a ball, while being on the higher part of a seesaw. The seesaw equals life; the lower part of the seesaw is all the stress that everyone has and goes through, and the higher part is putting life in perspective.

"Frazzle" had an extreme amount of stress and the weight of the world was on his shoulders, but once he "flipped it" he realized that there was no reason to get stressed out over the little things. Halloway hopes that when people see "Frazzle" they will "smile and remember to 'Put It In Perspective.'"

On "Flip It's" Web site (www.flipitforlife.com) people can read cancer victims' stories, as well as post their own stories.

Also on the site, people can purchase "Flip It For Life" products, like T-shirts, tote bags, long sleeve shirts, sports bags, golf towels, and a "Sweats" collection, which includes sweat pants, hoodies, and sweatshirts. "Flip It For Life" is on their products, and some of the products even include "Frazzle" on them.

On most of their shirts, they have "Flip It For Life" and "Frazzle" on the front, and "Put it in Perspective" on the back. On other shirts, however, they have "Flip It For Life" on the front, and "Frazzle" on the back. For their "Sweats" collection, "Flip It For Life" and "Frazzle" are on the front.

"Our tees with 'Put It In Perspective' on the back are the best seller, but our newer hoodies are really popular as well," said Halloway about his "Flip It For Life" products, adding, "It's our hope that we'll get big beach towels and sports bottles just in time for the summer months!"

The goal of "Flip It For Life" is specifically to further the advancement of cancer research. They are committed to raising money for cancer research by donating all of the net proceeds from any "Flip It For Life" product purchased to The American Cancer Society's general research category.

On March 28, after four weeks of being up and running, "Flip It For Life" made one of their first donations to the American Cancer Society in the amount of $350.

"My sister Robin and I did an interview for WJAR NBC 10 and they were able to catch this pivotal moment on film. It was great to have Robin there as a symbol (and constant reminder) for why we created 'Flip It For Life,'" said Halloway. Halloway went on to add, "It is so simple to get lost in the chaos and stresses of everyday life, but we must always remember to 'put things in perspective' and realize that life's not so bad. There are people who are fighting for their lives in the battle against cancer, yet, they are the ones who remain so hopeful. Somehow they're able to 'put it in perspective.'"
