City man seriously hurt in SA crash

ATTLEBORO - A local man was seriously injured when the pickup truck he was driving slammed into a utility pole and rolled over Monday night on Brown Street in front of Coelho Middle School in South Attleboro.

The victim, a 21-year-old Attleboro resident, was trapped in and under the vehicle for about 20 minutes, and was going to be flown by a helicopter to a hospital but was eventually taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, with a possible broken arm and leg, by an Attleboro Rescue crew, Fire Capt. Bill LaPlume said.

The man's identity was not released by presstime.

"He had a lot of cuts and bruises," LaPlume said. "He is a very lucky young man."

It was later learned the man also suffered a possible concussion.

The pole contained guide wires and no electrical or other utility wires.

"He snapped it right off and somehow catapulted in the air, and landed on the roof, flattened the roof right down to the headrest," LaPlume said. "He probably didn't have his seat belt on. He was bouncing around the vehicle and his legs went out the windshield. They were pinned outside, with the dashboard sitting between his legs and the road. That is what made it so difficult to get him out."

The crash was reported just before 9 p.m.

Calling the medical helicopter was a precaution.

"We weren't sure how lengthy the extrication would be. We started a Medflight but we were lucky and able to get him out on time," LaPlume said.

A ladder truck was called to assist with the accident as air bags were needed to lift the vehicle. Two fire engines were also sent to the scene besides the ambulance.
