Attleboro High freshman remains critical after crash that left Attleboro girl dead

ATTLEBORO - A 16-year-old boy was still listed in critical condition Monday night, three days after a single-vehicle accident which killed the 17-year-old city girl who was driving.

Nathan Birch, an Attleboro High School freshman, suffered severe head injuries in the crash late Friday night and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Killed in the 11 p.m. accident was 17-year-old Attleboro High School junior Rebeckha Whitefield.

Attleboro High School had counselors available at the school Monday to talk to students left stunned by the sudden death of one of their classmates and the serious injury of another.

The sport utility vehicle they were riding in crashed into a tree near 34 Oakhill Ave. on a rain-slick road, throwing both occupants out of the vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by city police and state police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

No new information was released Monday.
