BOYS' TRACK: Shamrock boys use plenty of seconds for first place




milton - Second place ruled the day for the Bishop Feehan High boys' track team, which collared a half-dozen runner-up prizes in capturing the MSTCA Class C Relay Meet championship Saturday at Milton High School.

With eight points awarded for second place, the Shamrocks secured 48 with those runner-up finishes and totaled 64 points overall, 10 better than Hingham in the 32-team field.

It was the Shamrocks' first relay meet title since 2005 and marked the first time ever that both the Bishop Feehan High boys' and girls' track teams took home championships.

The Shamrocks won one event, the shuttle hurdles, with junior Jason Brown and senior Chris Conway bookending the quartet with a 1:02.3 finish.

Then sophomores Kevin Beland (4x100) and Mike McShane (4x800) anchored second-place teams. Senior Mike McMcGowan clocked a split of 22.8 seconds for t he runner-up 4x200 relay team, junior John Cook clocked a 3:28 opening leg for the second place distance medley team, Tom Effler uncorked a throw of 164-feet for the runner-up javelin team and Brown soared a personal best 6-1 for the runner-up high jump team.

Seniors Dylan Ferragi and Bobby Ceurvels and sophomore Brian Espinosa all had a couple of top-four performances as finished with 18 points during the Class C State Relays.

Ferragi, Ceurvels and Espinosa finished in first place in the triple jump with a combined distance of 123-7. That trio joined junior John Scanlon to place fourth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:33:40.

D-R will compete in the SCC Championship Meet Wednesday in Seekonk.

Also at the Class C Meet, Brian Foley, Will Caine, Stephan Neville and Shawn Geary finished in fourth place in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:45:40. Foley, Caine, Neville and Steve Valencia also placed third in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:34:30, while Aaron Taylor, Colin Huether and Caine were fourth in the javelin relay with a total of 417 feet for the Warriors, who scored 14 points during the meet.

Ryan Doherty, Elijah Harris, Matt Smith and Nick Wade finished in second place in the sprint medley relay as placed ninth in the Class B State Relays.

The Rocketeer quartet finished second in the sprint medley with a combined time of 3:34:50. North placed ninth in the team standings with a total of 24 points. Mark Wolff, Brian Courtney and Kevin Peter also finished second in the shot put relay with a total of 139-8.

Juniors Dan Glavin, Brett Weiner and Sebastian Bilentschuk combined to capture the discus relay competition as finished fifth with a total of 32 points during the Class B State Relays.

Glavin, Weiner, Bilentschuk teamed up to win the discus with a total of 380-3. Glavin, Chris Fong and Shawn McCabe finished in third place in the shot put with a total of 136-81/2.

Chris Harney, Peter Starke, Kyle Kilduff and Patrick Grimes placed second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:20:61, while Andrew Erwin, Starke, Mike Bolea and Grimes were third in the 4xmile relay with a time of 19:05:19. At Dennis-Yarmouth, had just one placement, a second by the triple jump team with senior captain Brian Toney logging a distance of 43-1/4.

At the Class A Meet, captured 19 points among the 35 schools competing. The Bombardiers' javelin team captured second place with Tony Vincent uncorking a throw of 150-feet. Meanwhile, the long jump team set a Bombardier record with Kyle Dragun (20-11/2), Joe Roy (19-9) and Chris Gulino (19-7) all having personal-best throws.
