Community VNA plans hospice care series


ATTLEBORO - A six-week series presented by Community VNA Hospice Care offers a learning and supportive experience to begin the journey toward healing. The series will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning May 7 and continuing through June 6 at Community VNA, 10 Emory St., Attleboro.

Clam boil supports AHS hockey players


ATTLEBORO - The AHS Hockey Parents Booster Club will hold a clam boil fundraiser at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 at the South Seekonk Gun Club, 61 Reed St., Rehoboth.

Tickets are $22 per person. The event will start raising the necessary funds for the hockey team for next season.

The players take care of serving every guest, as well as cleaning up.

ATTLEBORO - The Wound Care Center at Sturdy Memorial Hospital will host a free foot screening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 30 in the hospital's auditorium.

The foot screening will be performed by Dr. Tiffany Hodgson and Dr. Martin Harris. Information on foot care, nutrition tips, and Doppler tests performed by the Sturdy Memorial Vascular Lab will be provided, as well as complimentary refreshments and raffle prizes.

Screening for foot sores and ulcers in diabetics is the first step in preventing diabetes-related complications. Registration is necessary for this screening.

Lions poker event slated for May 30

ATTLEBORO - The South Attleboro Village Lions will hold a "Texas hold 'em" event at the Attleboro Elks Hall, South Main Street, on Friday, May 30. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with a 7 p.m. start.

There is a $50 buy-in charge. There will be payouts to all players at the final table, with the first place winner to receive a $1,000 gift card.

Dance May 30 at city YMCA

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro YMCA and the Attleboro Drug Abuse Resistance Education program will hold their next dance for middle schoolers - those only in Grades 5 through 7 - on Friday, May 30, with advance ticket purchase required by Thursday, May 29.

Tickets are $5 each and include pizza and a DJ. The dance is specifically for students in grades 5-7, and school IDs will be required to confirm grade and school. If a student does not have a school ID, the most recent report card or note from a parent will suffice. Glow sticks are not permitted at the dance, and tickets will not be sold at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m., and close promptly at 7:20. The dance concludes promptly at 9.

Eat spaghetti at church May 31

ATTLEBORO - A spaghetti dinner will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at St. Joseph's Church, 208 South Main St.

Woman of Today hold blood drive

ATTLEBORO - The Greater Attleboro Women of Today, along with LaSalette Shrine, will hold its annual American Red Cross Blood Drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at the cafeteria of the shrine, located on Route 118.

Anyone who donates blood will be given a coupon from Uno Chicago Grill for a free pizza and be able to enter a drawing to win Red Sox tickets.



Scout yard sale supports projects


ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro Pack 33 Cub Scouts will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 31 at the Murray Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 North Main St.

While Pack 33 currently has a wide selection of household items, children's games, furniture, clothing, books and tools for the yard sale, the scouts will accept any donated items in good, clean condition.

A portion of the proceeds earned May 31 will help defray expenses for both the Blackinton Park Revitalization Project and the Attleboro Vernal Pool community service project, both of which the scouts are currently working on.

Paws for Cause planned May 31

ATTLEBORO - The Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter is asking area residents once again to "Paws for the Cause" when the group holds its fifth annual fundraising Pet Walk on Saturday, May 31, rain or shine.

Proceeds will benefit the cats and dogs of the Attleboro Animal Shelter. The Pet Walk travels a 1 1/2-mile route from the Attleboro Moose Lodge at 463 Thacher St. to Capron Park in Attleboro and back, kicking off at 11 a.m. from the Moose Lodge, with a Blessing of the Animals at 10:45 a.m. Registration for the walk will begin at 10 a.m., and the event will continue after the walk until 3 p.m., with a variety of children's activities and the availability of food, beverages and informational booths. City YMCA book club to read 'Love'

ATTLEBORO - The Attleboro YMCA's monthly book club will meet on the last Thursday of the month at 7 p.m.

Led by YMCA staff member Christine Davidson, the Primetime coordinator at the YMCA, the club aims to promote reading and discussion among YMCA members and members of the local community.

Murray Church plans upcoming events


ATTLEBORO - Murray Unitarian Universalist Church will hold its Spring into Summer Fair, including a rummage sale and tables displaying the handiwork and wares of local crafters and vendors, on June 7.

Donations of usable items are needed. Items may be dropped off at Murray Church in the Blue Room (corner room across from Fellowship Hall). New mom? Get support at Sturdy


ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital is hosting a free new moms group for mothers with babies between the ages of 0 and 9. The program will be led by a certified parent educator.

The next three-week program will begin on Wednesday, June 4 and continue on June 11 and 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Clinical Education Center, located near the main lobby.

Proceeds will go toward the Attleboro YMCA Best Friends Campaign. The clinic will be led by former Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ken Ryan, who currently operates KR Baseball Academy in Pawtucket.

It will be open for boys and girls ages 7 through 17. Registration is required. Participants should bring a glove and should wear sneakers.

Agudas Achim hosts adoption workshop


ATTLEBORO - Congregation Agudas Achim will host a workshop on adoption from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at the synagogue, 901 North Main St.

"Adoption Then and Now: How Adoption Has Changed Over the Years" will be presented by Betsy Alper. The workshop will also provide information and answers for those currently considering adoption.

Alper is the clinical supervisor at Adoption Options, a non-sectarian, non-profit, comprehensive adoption program of Jewish Family Service that works with prospective adoptive parents, birth parents and people who have been adopted.

"Adoption Then and Now..." is part of The Kesher Program, a partnership between Congregation Agudas Achim, Jewish Family Service, and the Jewish Federation of RI to provide an onsite social worker to assist members of the congregation during life transitions and crises.

Get screened for skin cancer

ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital will hold a free skin cancer screening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26 in the Oncology Suite located in the Emergency Care Center.

Local MOPS group to meet at city church


ATTLEBORO - A local chapter of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) will meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month from through May from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Faith Alliance Church, 833 Pleasant St. (Route 123), Attleboro.

MOPS which gives mothers time with other mothers to build friendships, participate in discussions and gain encouragement. MOPS is open to all mothers in Attleboro and the surrounding towns who have children ages birth to kindergarten.

Free childcare in a preschool like setting is provided in our "Moppets" program. Infants 6 months and under may attend the discussions with their mothers.

This year's theme is "The HOME factor: BEGIN HERE ... GO THERE," and lectures from area speakers, discussion groups, and handmade crafts will be some of the many actives based on this theme presented during the course of this year. The $50 annual membership fee includes local membership to MOPS, MomSense magazine, MOPS gift books and more. Scholarships are available.

City woman to hold yard sale for research

ATTLEBORO - Two cousins, Amanda Sousa of Taunton and Jessica DeShiro, have formed a team for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk which will be taking place on Sept. 27 in Providence at Blackstone Park.

The women will be holding a yard sale where 100 percent of what is sold will go to the Society. The yard sale is going to be held on Saturday, June 7 at 73 Valley Run Drive, Attleboro.

ATTLEBORO - The Blue Pride Gridiron Club's third annual golf tournament will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence.

There will be a shotgun start. Cost of $100 per player includes golf, cart, t-shirt and Texas barbecue dinner, with cash prizes for first through third place. There will also be a hole-in-contest to win a car and other contests.

Give blood at Sturdy July 1

ATTLEBORO - Sturdy Memorial Hospital, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will hold a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 1 in the hospital's Rice-Webb Auditorium.

All blood types are needed. Donors need only be 17 years of age and at least 110 pounds. There is no upper age limit and previous donors can give every 56 days.

All donors will receive refreshments and be entered in a raffle. To schedule an appointment, call 508- 236-8555. The process takes approximately one hour.

AYS night set for Aug. 30 at Gillette

ATTLEBORO - Attleboro Youth Soccer night will be Saturday, Aug. 30 at Gillette Stadium. Referrals sought for youth program

ATTLEBORO - Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently accepting referrals for Attleboro youth ages 12 to 16 for its Intensive After School program.

There is no cost for the program and transportation is provided. The program will run April 29 through July 1. This three-day-a-week group includes team building, group work, mentoring, life skills, and social and recreational activities.

The program also includes a one-to-one mentoring experience utilizing the Sensata Corporate Campus and employees. Involvement also includes the opportunity for youths to become involved in volunteer positions and internships. Aid is also available to assist with employment applications and interview skills.



SMARTS accepting summers signups


ATTLEBORO - Registration is now being accepted for the 2008 SMARTS Summer Institute, an program that provides students with an opportunity to study creative writing, dance, drama, film/video, instrumental, strings, vocal, and visual arts at three levels.

The elementary program is for students grades 1-3 and runs from June 30 to July 18. The junior program is for students grades 4-7 and runs from June 30 to July 25. The senior program is for students grades 7-12 and runs July 7 to Aug. 1.

All programs are Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. and take place at the Brennan Middle School in Attleboro.

SHINE program to train volunteers

ATTLEBORO - Volunteers are being recruited for the Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders program, known as SHINE.

Those who have eight hours or more per month, and would like to help senior citizens understand health insurance coverage, are sought. SHINE counselors are trained and certified by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

ATTLEBORO - New Hope, the local domestic violence and sexual assault agency, is looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers to join its Rape Crisis Advocate Team.

As part of the on call response team, rape crisis advocates meet survivors at hospitals and police stations and provide crisis intervention, support and referrals.
