Lowrie to help city Y kick off campaign

ATTLEBORO - Attleboro YMCA Executive Director Duane German says the YMCA will kick off its annual Best Friends Support Campaign with a breakfast next month.

The event will feature the Boston Red Sox top prospect Jed Lowrie, who is currently on the Major League roster.

The infielder will appear at the breakfast after two other top prospects at the time - second baseman Dustin Pedroia, last year's Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year, and outfielder David Murphy - did the honors the last two years. Both are starting in the Major League's today, with Boston and Texas, respectively.

The breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, June 12 at the Highland Country Club, and will conclude by 9 a.m.

The event also will highlight the work the YMCA does to improve the quality of life for youth and families in the community. E. Dennis Kelly, president of Bristol County Savings Bank and vice president of the YMCA, is the chairman of the campaign, which hopes to raise $85,000 to support the activities of the YMCA.

Last year, $168,994 was used to provide YMCA opportunities for more than 1,800 individuals and families through confidential scholarship awards. Anawon Trust and Nations Heritage Credit Union are continuing as this year's presenting sponsors.
