Ex-Monkee at Chan's; laughter in the Garden

Peter Tork and the Blue Suede Blues play at Chan's in Woonsocket, R.I., this Saturday. (Submitted)

Two legends of music and comedy will be vying for attention in the southeastern Massachusetts-Rhode Island area this weekend, with former Monkee Peter Tork and his band at Chan's in Woonsocket and folk's Funny Girl, Cheryl Wheeler, holding court at the Rose Garden Coffeehouse in Mansfield on Saturday.

Chan's will be presenting Tork and his band Shoe Suede Blues in shows at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $17 for the early show and $12 for the nightcap.

Tork, a founding member of the 1960s made-for-TV pop group The Monkees, has compiled credits as an actor as well as a singer and musician. He plays a dizzying array of instruments including banjo, piano, drums, guitar and bass. Bandmates include Richard Mikuls, Jeff Olson and Arnold Jacks.

Wheeler will be featured along with the wind-up of the Rose Garden's annual singer-songwriter competition pitting Jenny Goodspeed and Chuck Hall, both of Massachusetts, against Brian Kalinec of Texas for the top honors. The performance begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Maryland native Wheeler has toured throughout the U.S. and recorded a number of albums, but much of her original material performed at live shows has never been recorded. Her programs usually include comic routines, serious philosophical discussions as well as her original songs.
Cheryl Wheeler brings her combination of ballads and comedy to the Rose Garden for Saturday's season finale. (Submited)
Wheeler's tunes have been covered by a wide variety of artists including Suzy Bagguss, Garth Brooks, Bette Midler and Peter, Paul and Mary.
