Alleged Attleboro gang member out on bail
Top Headlines Vanarath Heng, 19, of 25 East St., was arrested Feb. 27 after state and local police raided his home and found a sawed-off shotgun in the basement of his apartment house. The weapon is illegal in Massachusetts. Heng, an alleged member of the A-Town Crips, was held in jail for 90 days after an Attleboro District Court judged agreed with prosecutors and deemed him a dangerous person in a hearing. Prosecutors have since reduced the charge to unlawful possession of a firearm. Heng, who has no prior criminal record and whose family denies any gang ties, has pleaded innocent. His lawyer, Daniel Rich, requested bail for Heng last Tuesday, saying prosecutors have not indicted him or tried him within 90 days, and challenged the evidence against him. Bail was set at $15,000 but it was reduced to $5,000 by Judge David McLaughlin after a review hearing in New Bedford Superior Court. Heng was freed on Friday, according to a spokesman for the Bristol County Sheriff's Office. He is due back in Attleboro District Court June 20.
