SOFTBALL: Apponequet too much for FHS

LAKEVILLE - Foxboro High's MIAA Division 2-South Tournament appearance might have been brief, but the Warriors left enough behind in a five-inning, 15-0 loss to Apponequet to give an indication that they'll be back very soon.

"They're going to be a very, very good team," said Apponequet softball coach Jim Cabucio, whose team will be moving on to play Saturday in the first round against Middleboro (5-0 winner over Westport). "They're a very young team with a lot of freshmen. I have seven girls who have played for three years. I hear a lot of good things about the (Foxboro) coaching staff. They are going to be a tough team and they play against tough competition."

In her first year at the helm, head coach Randi Carine knew she was in a rebuilding year with Foxboro, which finished with a 3-18 record and made the tournament by virtue of a 2-2 record against Division 2 opponents. Carine also had an idea of what she was up against with the sixth-seeded Lakers (now 17-4) on the other side of the diamond in the preliminary round contest.

"(Apponequet) are an experienced, veteran team," said Carine. "That's the type of team I want Foxboro to be."

What the Lakers did was give Carine a visual to go by when she instructs her team on to get to the next level and be prepared to win once you get there. "This was a great experience for us," she said. "We saw the work ethic you need to have. You have to play summer ball, go to pitching and catching clinics and get into the weight room. I want what they have right there."

Cabucio also has a very determined team. A year ago, the Lakers were eliminated in a preliminary round game against Archbishop Williams on their home field and they weren't about to let that happen again this year. Apponequet's gameplan was to put the pressure on the Warriors early defensively and score quickly and often.

The Lakers did just that scoring eight times in the first inning, taking advantage of Foxboro's miscues. Apponequet was ahead 12-0 after two innings and already going to their second pitcher of the game.

"We were definitely nervous" said Carine. "(Foxboro) wasn't nervous on the bus, playing their music, but that's what happens with a young team. We made mistakes and they were able to capitlize on them with hits."

Apponequet catcher Stephanie Freitag, who drove in three runs from the lead off spot, delivered a two-run double before scoring on a triple by first Alyssa Shea, who also had an RBI double in the first inning.

Foxboro did settle down after the first two innings. Freshman pitcher Kalya Malone had a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth, but the damage was done with the Warriors trailing 13-0 at that point,

With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lakers' Jen Lowrey drove in the 14th run with a single and then scored the final run on a base hit by Christa Cosia. That run ended the game after 42/3 innings because of the 15-run mercy rule.

Foxboro was held to two hits by the Laker duo of senor righthander Samantha Crose and senior lefthander Jen Lowrey, who each worked two innings and each gave up a single.

Foxboro junior first baseman Ally Valencia led off the bottom of the second inning with a single off of Crose, but was left stranded at second base. Warrior second baseman Caroline Kelly had a one-out single in the top of third inning, but didn't advance past first base.

Freshman outfielder Chelsea Laracy also got as far as second base for the Warriors, leading off the top of the fourth by reaching on an infield error. Lowrey, though, got a ground out and a pair of strikeouts to get out of it.
