GOBIS: Local duo helps Worcester St.

Up at Worcester State College, the Lancer baseball team (24-18) received some nifty pitching from Attleboro High School grad Craig McBride and hitting from North Attleboro High product Nick Caparell.

McBride, a junior, had a 6-2 record with a 3.30 ERA in 13 appearances, totaling 46 strikeouts in 571/3 innings and foes batted just .258 against him. Caparell, a sophomore outfielder (heading to the Boise, Idaho summer league for the Nampa Rapids), played in 32 games, batting .310 with a .405 slugging percentage and 17 RBI. His brother Jeff is a freshman on the team as well...

Selected as the Hockomock League's Scholar-Athletes of the Year from North Attleboro High were trackster Amanda Parker and three-sport standout Kevin Connolly; from Foxboro High were three-sport standout Tara Greeley and track-soccer performer Ben Harris; from Mansfield High were trackster Liz Sullivan and soccer-baseball player Billy McGee; and from King Philip High were three-sporter Emily Cannon and basketball-baseball player Chris Horne...

Former Bishop Feehan High Shamrock Greg Hopkins of Mansfield started 50 games for the Big East Conference champion St. John's University baseball team (a single-season record 42 wins), batting at a .307 clip with a .477 slugging rate as a freshman shortstop. Hopkins totaled 23 walks, five homers and 34 RBI, while having a .928 fielding percentage. The Red Storm eventually bowed to Texas, 4-3, in the Southwest Regional of the NCAA Division I Tournament in Houston...

Seekonk High sharpshooter Tyler Patch will be attending Keene State in New Hampshire...

King Philip High graduate Kyle Shea, the senior captain and long-stick defender for the Plymouth State men's lacrosse team (12-7) played in the annual East-West NEIL lacrosse game at Harvard. Shea started 16 matches and fetched 35 ground balls...

Talk about bad luck! North Attleboro High senior Kevin Connolly suffers a concussion on the game-opening kickoff on Thanksgiving Day against Attleboro and never returns to the field; then suffers a case of mononucleosis and has to step off the field for the Rocketeer baseball team's run in the MIAA Tournament...

Former North Attleboro High Rocketeer TyLynn Graham, a junior representing the URI women's track team, captured eighth place in the high jump (5-71/4) at the Eastern Regional Meet at Florida State...

King Philip High girls' track coach Peter Boucher was more than proud of his Warriors, who competed in the MIAA Division 2 Meet Friday night - the same night as the prom, making the ultimate team sacrifice. Katie Kelleher qualified for Saturday's MIAA Meet with a second place and personal-best throw of 104-7; Katie Burns took 10th in the mile run; while Melissa Smith and Kelleher were 10-11 with the shot put...

Senior captain James Bensson, playing at the No. 1 singles spot for three seasons and his heir apparent, freshman Tim Flynn, who stepped right into the No. 2 singles for the Attleboro High boys' tennis team have been selected to the Old Colony League all-star team...

"Those two had unbelievable chemistry," related Mansfield High boys' tennis coach Dan Etter of the lone two seniors in his starting lineup, the No. 2 doubles team of soccer standouts Jeff Ivas and Ryan Chambers, who combined for a 17-0 slate...

Lost in the baseball shuffle quite often at Seekonk High according to coach Dave Hanson was the production of second baseman Jeff Olson, who batted .350 and outfielder Mitch LaChance, who batted .370 with 20 RBI...

Providence College basketball officials inform me that junior guard Sharaud Curry, still in a walking cast after two foot surgeries, is expected to be ready for the start of the season. Also word on the rebound is that former Friar coach Tim Welsh is negotiating with ESPN for a studio analyst spot...

King Philip High's No. 1 tennis singles player Courtney Puddester is resting comfortably at home after undergoing an emergency appendectomy, forcing not only her to miss her quarterfinal round match against Bishop Feehan, but her mom, Laurie, the KP boys' coach, had to miss her team's quarterfinal match at Sharon. "Can you believe the timing,?" said Laurie Puddester, who then summoned KP track coach Peter Boucher to fill in "because he's an incredible motivational speaker"...

At the MIAA Division 4 Track Meet, Norton High boys' coach Bob Rukstalis was particularly pleased with the solid showings of senior Tom McDermott (53.92) and freshman Tim Johansmeyer (53.94) in the 400.
