State officials are asking residents to check on elderly neighbors and make sure children and pets are not left in parked cars today as much of New England hits its first heat wave of the season.

Temperatures are expected to reach into the mid-90s today, possibly breaking weather records. People are advised to stay inside because the air may be unhealthy.

Attleboro hit 96 degrees - a June 8 record - at 2 p.m. Sunday, according to the Attleboro Water Department.

Highs today could hit 95 but it will feel more like 100 because of the high humidity, forecasters said.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection said air quality will be poor for much of the day. Tuesday is expected to bring much the same.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency suggests several ways to beat the heat, including:

Slow down, avoid strenuous activity.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect heat and sunlight and help maintain normal body temperature.

Drink plenty of water regularly and often, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Stay indoors as much as possible.

The break from the heat is expected Thursday, when the high temperature drops to the low 80s. Residents should also be aware of symptoms of heat-related illness, such as cramps, headaches or nausea. At its most severe, heat stroke can be life-threatening.

Many communities have opened up cooling centers for residents without air conditioning.
