Mobile surgery unit coming to Mansfield today

MANSFIELD - A mobile surgery unit used by Italian troops in Iraq and the Veterans Administration, among others, will be on display at the Mansfield Holiday Inn today and Thursday.

The fully integrated mobile operating room is manufactured by Mobile Medical International Corp. of St. Johnsbury, Vt.

A growing number of biotechnology and medical device manufacturers are headquartered in the Cabot Business Park, where the Holiday Inn is located.

The surgery unit, which can be transported by tractor-trailer, hydraulically expands to three times its size to contain a 400-square-foot operating room complete with the latest in surgical lighting, sterilization and air filtration systems, according to the company.

It also has a scrub sink, nurse station and medical gas capabilities in its large pre-op and post-op area. Mobile Medical International is promoting the mobile surgery unit to hospitals which are planning operating room renovations and emergency planners in need of medical infrastructure during a disaster.

Customers who have bought a mobile unit include the U.S. Army, the Royal Oman Police, and the Kaiser Permanente managed care organization.
