LEGION BASEBALL: Hastings pitches Foxboro to victory

DEDHAM - Ben Hastings worked six solid innings and Chuck Erickson provided the big blow offensively as the Foxboro American Legion baseball team won for the second day in a row, edging out Dedham 2-1 Tuesday.

Hastings, a Norton High School product, spread out eight hits over his six innings of work, striking out five without walking a batter. Joe Swindells, out of Mansfield, worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh - with two strikeouts - to shut the door on Dedham and pick up the save.

Post 93 got all the offense it needed in the sixth with one swing of Erickson's bat. Down 1-0, Foxboro got a walk from John Garabedian to lead things off. Garabedian, who also had two of Foxboro's four hits, moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a groundout. Erickson followed with a two-run home run, deep and over the fence in right field.

S. Attleboro 12, New Bedford 1

NEW BEDFORD - Lucas Gagne gave up just one hit and an unearned run over six innings as Post 312 opened its summer season with a dominating performance against New Bedford. South Attleboro scored two runs in the first inning and then five more in the second inning to break things open early.

Paul Piatelli, an Attleboro native who attends the Berkshire School, led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI.

Gagne walked three and fanned six in his six innings then Sam Dodge pitched a scoreless seventh.

Norton 10, Taunton 8

NORTON - A seven-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Norton Legion team erased an 8-3 deficit for its second win in as many games.

Andrew McCarty led the 14-hit, Norton attack by going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Rick Travers was 3-for-3 with two runs driven in and a run scored while Shawn Ryan was 2-for-4. Neil Johnson capped the sixth with a two-run double.

Tom MacKenzie picked up the win in relief for Norton, pitching an inning-plus of scoreless ball. Coyle-Cassidy product Brandon Halacy picked up a one-out save.

Norton, which won its opener 12-6 over Fairhaven, returns to the field Thursday against Easton.
