Attleboro Head Start gets OK for a move

ATTLEBORO - Preschoolers in the city's Head Start program are likely headed for a change of scenery.

Head Start officials are working with the school department to move classes for 40 youngsters from the Richardson School building on Pine Street to the former Briggs Corner School on Oakhill Avenue.

The move has already received approval from a state agency overseeing the program, school department Business Manager Marc Furtado said.

Schools are also working with city building officials to secure the required permits.

Head Start classes have been located at the former city elementary school on Pine Street for many years. However, Self Help Inc. director Jonathan Carlson said that the move was fueled by a need for greater security.

"We've actually never had a problem there," said Carlson, who added that foot traffic in and out of the building associated with other programs makes it impossible to provide airtight security. "We need to be proactive."

The Briggs Corner School, which has played host in recent years to Project Connect and an English-as-a-second-language program for immigrant mothers, already has a security system in place, Furtado said.

Once required permits are in place, Furtado said, it is likely an agreement would be signed between the school system and Head Start officials.
