ATTLEBORO - A cigarette is being blamed for a fire on a South Attleboro porch on Sunday.
The homeowner, his 13- to 14-month-old daughter and his sister were upstairs in a front room when the fire started at 17 Andover Ave., off Newport Avenue, shortly before 2:15 p.m., Deputy Fire Chief Glenn Livesey said.
The occupants made it out of the house before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.
A cigarette put out in an ashtray on a table in the enclosed porch ignited some nearby paper products, Livesey said.
A backyard neighbor on Pitas Avenue called 911. "He could see gray smoke coming off the porch for about 20 minutes," Livesey said. The neighbor initially thought the Andover Avenue residents were barbecuing, the deputy fire chief said.
