KIRBY: Spreading your news
Top Headlines My answer? It's a whole lot easier to spread the word about your club, organization, business or youth sports team in the 21st century, thanks to today's technology. The Sun Chronicle has always tried to provide space on its pages for the many groups that serve as the backbone for the 10 communities where we circulate. It's not easy. We can get flooded with items, especially in the spring and fall when community activities are at their peak, and there's just not enough space to run them all on the exact schedule that the people submitting them want them run in the paper. But, as I said, things are much easier nowadays, thanks to technology. E-mails have allowed our readers to get their information - stories AND photos - to us more quickly. And we love e-mail submissions, and not only because it spares us the burden of retyping them. One of the best thing about e-mail submissions to us is that the material tends to be more accurate, thanks to copy and paste. There are far fewer mistakes due to shaky penmanship - you'd be surprised how a 4 can look like a 7. And, if we're uncertain about information - it's amazing how many times dates get mixed up on community submissions - e-mail is a much more efficient way of communicating than the phone. There's one other important way that technology has allowed readers to better spread the word, with the help of The Sun Chronicle - through our Web site. If you've visited thesunchronicle.com recently, you'll notice there are links to each community that we cover. Click on one of those links, and you'll see all of the most recent stories from that community. And it's not just the stories that our reporters write that are on those pages, it's stuff that you write. On the right side of each page is a list of community briefs while at the top are links that read "Submit a story" and "Submit a photo." Just click on those and follow the instructions to post your information where more than 10,000 people visit every day. And remember this: There are about 2,000-2,500 inches of space reserved for news in your average Sun Chronicle. There are no space limitations at thesunchronicle.com. And stuff can stay on the site for a week, not a day. Here are a couple of tips for sending us your information: THE ADDRESS - Another question I'm asked frequently is, "Who do I send my news to?" I always tell them, send it to news@thesunchronicle.com. That e-mail box is checked seven days a week, 365 days a year. If you know your submission is for sports, send it to sports@thesunchronicle.com. Letters to the editor are sent to opinion@thesunchronicle.com. Sending to individuals tends to slow down the handling of material because no one works seven days a week, and at this time of year, vacations are frequent. Your news could be sitting in an individual's e-mail box for two weeks. PHOTOS - Digital photography has enabled everyone to be journalists. We're happy to consider photos from community groups. Just e-mail us a digital photo in jpg format to news@thesunchronicle.com and we'll look it over. An important reminder: Please send us the identification of everyone in the photo - first name, last name, and please be careful about the spelling. MIKE KIRBY is editor of The Sun Chronicle. He can be reached at 508-236-0344 or at mkirby@thesunchronicle.com.
