Attleboro plans to bring sex offender back

ATTLEBORO - City detectives hope to go to Vermont this weekend to take custody of a wanted Level 3 sex offender who was arrested earlier this week in Newark, Vt.

Randy L. Barrett Sr., 48, who police say listed his address as homeless but stayed in Attleboro, is in jail in St. Johnsbury, Vt. on $25,000 cash bail, but has waived a hearing to return to Massachusetts, Attleboro Detective Lt. John Otrando said.

Barrett, who the state considers a high risk offender, was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender.

Barrett was convicted of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and rape of a child with force in 1991, according to the state Sex Offender Registry Board.

He was arrested by Vermont State Police Tuesday on a fugitive of justice warrant based on the Attleboro charges. A conviction for failing to register as a sex offender carries a minimum jail sentence of six months and a maximum of five years in prison.
