Driver in stabbing case enters guilty plea

ATTLEBORO - The driver of the getaway car in last December's stabbing at a public housing project pleaded guilty Wednesday in Attleboro District Court and was sentenced to jail.

Evan Baker, 20, of 160 Pine St. in Attleboro, was sentenced to serve 18 months of a maximum 2 1/2-year jail sentence after pleading guilty to assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon.

The balance of the jail term was suspended with probation.

Prosecutor Paul Machado said even though Baker was the driver, he shared in a "joint venture" with co-defendants in the crime.

Ronald Moore, 23, was stabbed in the shoulder in the early morning hours of Dec. 15, when he tried to prevent a fight between his friends and others with Baker in what authorities said was possibly a gang-related altercation. Moore had no gang affiliation.

Last one charged

Baker, who bought the knife at Emerald Square mall in North Attleboro earlier that day, was the last of four defendants charged in the case. All but one received jail sentences.

Moore suffered a deep gash in his left shoulder when he was pulled into Baker's car. He was treated at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

The defendants were arrested on Olive Street moments after the stabbing when Officer Gerald Larsen stopped the vehicle.
