Callahan powers Seekonk Post 311

Seekonk’s Cody Callahan

SOMERSET - Cody Callahan drove in five runs as the Seekonk American Legion baseball team scored early and often in a 14-5 pounding of Somerset Tuesday night in Zone 9 action.

Callahan was 3-for-5 with three doubles and the five RBI. Jake Capello also had a big night with the bat for Post 311, adding a two-run double and a two-run home run, his third of the season. Seekonk scored two in the first inning, four in the second then three in the third.

Somerset, which beat Seekonk 8-4 less than a week ago, kept things close with two runs in the first and two more in the third, making it 9-4. Seekonk put the game well out of reach with four more runs in the seventh.

Billy Cosmopulos was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, going six innings on the mound for Seekonk. He gave up four earned runs, walked one and struck out 11.

Seekonk, 8-3 in the month of July and 15-5-2 overall, needs one more win in its two remaining games to clinch third place in the Zone. Regardless, it's looking like Seekonk will play fourth-place Swansea in the first round of the playoffs. Whichever team finishes third will have home-field advantage in the best-of-three playoffs, which start Sunday.

Acushnet 4, Norton 3

NORTON - Also in Zone 9 play, Norton finished up the home portion of its regular-season schedule with a loss to Acushnet Post 265.

Visiting Acushnet used a three-run fifth inning to erase a 3-1 deficit.

The loss dropped Norton to 12-11 on the summer, with one regular-season game left, Thursday night (7) at New Bedford. With just the one game remaining, Post 222 is currently sixth in the Zone 9 standings, with the top six teams making the playoffs.

Devin Askew pitched six solid innings for Norton, giving up just two earned runs.

Norton had a three-run third inning to take a 3-1 lead, then Acushnet answered in the fifth with three straight hits, including back-to-back wall-ball doubles after a Norton error.

After a three-game winning streak, this was the second straight loss for Norton, which fell 11-2 Monday night to Berkley.
