Softball all-stars named

ATTLEBORO - With two teams advancing to the semifinal round of MIAA South Sectional Tournament competition and another venturing to the quarterfinal round, seven area teams overall advancing into postseason competition, it was another superb season of softball in the area.
Five members of the MIAA Division 1-South Sectional semifinalist King Philip Regional High team and four members of the MIAA Division 1-South Sectional semifinalist Dighton-Rehoboth High Falcons highlight the selections to the 2008 Sun Chronicle All-Star Softball Team.
The Hockomock League champion Warriors, winners of 21 games overall, and the South Coast Conference champion Falcons, winners of 19 games, are joined on the All-Sun Chronicle roster by four members of the Seekonk High Warriors, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 3-South Tournament.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Jones, who won 34 games on the mound over the past two seasons, and sophomore catcher Maggie Quealy, who followed up on a .463 batting rate as a rookie with a .442 average this season, are among King Philip High's represntatives on the All-Sun Chronicle Team with the foundation for the future, a trio of sophomores - Sara Hedtler, Cara Daly and Casey McCourt.
Senior pitcher Kyla Puccini, who notched 24 mound wins over the past two seasons for Dighton-Rehoboth, is a repeat All-Sun Chronicle selection, being joined on the 2008 team by fellow Falcons Kristy Ulak, Brittney Noons and Tori Rocha.
Along with Jones, Quealy and Puccini as returning All-Sun Chronicle players are Mansfield High senior catcher Liz Moore, North Attleboro High senior third baseman Stephanie Burns and Seekonk High junior shortstop Lauren Medeiros. Moore followed up on a .463 season last year, hitting at a .438 rate in 2008 for the Hornets; Burns batted .410 last year and .413 this year for the Rocketeers; while Medeiros is a bonafide blaster, improving on a .470 rate last year to .560 this year, totaling 65 RBI over the the past two years for the Warriors.
Medeiros is one of four Seekonk Warriors receiving All-Sun Chronicle recognition with the Correia twin sisters - Chelsea, the catcher and Lauren, the center fielder - along with superb sophomore Krista Chauvin.
Attleboro High sophomore hurler Devin Azulay and a pair of Bishop Feehan Shamrocks, center fielder Kerin DeGirolamo and pitcher/third baseman Kayla Holland, are also on the Sun Chronicle team, along with two more Red Rocketeers, shortstop Brenna Johnson and first baseman Toni Zagami.
King Philip High advanced to the semifinals with postseason wins over No. 14 Stoughton and No. 11 Milton, before bowing to second-seeded Taunton. Dighton-Rehoboth advanced to the semifinals with postseason wins over No. 13 Somerset and No. 12 Walpole before losing (by one run) to top-seeded Braintree.
Seekonk, coming out of the highly-competitive South Coast Conference, beat No. 20 Dennis-Yarmouth and then No. 4 Bellingham before losing a one-run game in the quarterfinals to No. 5 Coyle-Cassidy.
In addition, North Attleboro (13 wins overall) won a round in the Division 1-South Tournament, while Mansfield (11 wins) and Bishop Feehan (10 wins) also qualified for postseason play. In Division 2, Seekonk (13 wins overall) was joined in the field by coach Randi Carine's first team at Foxboro High.
