Revs back in action tonight

FOXBORO - The Major League Soccer finals, the U.S. Open Cup and now the SuperLiga semifinals - the success story, on the field, continues for the New England Revolution.

The MLS Eastern Conference-leading Revolution meet Atlante in tonight's round of the final four, an 8 p.m. match at Gillette Stadium. New England is familiar with Atlante, having met in a "friendly" match in March in Playa Del Carmen, while the Revolution was on a preseason trip to Mexico.

Should New England prevail, the Revolution would then host the SuperLiga championship match on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Atlante, the reigning Mexican Apertura champion, was in the midst of its Clausura 2008 campaign when the two teams first met, while the Revs were still over three weeks away from the start of the MLS season. While Atlante prevailed 1-0, the match was noteworthy for its physical nature, with New England earning 10 cautions - including two each to Jeff Larentowicz and Chris Albright, who were both ejected.

There is a possibility that New England and Atlante could meet twice more this season.

Both could be part of Group C of the CONCACAF Champions League. If the Revolution win their home-and-away, aggregate goals series with Trinidad & Tobago's Joe Public FC, then they would join Atlante in Group C of the competition along with the top Honduran seed and the winner of the Canada-Nicaragua qualifying series. If that is the case, New England would travel to Mexico to face Atlante on Sept. 30, while the Revolution would host "Los Potros de Hierro" on Oct. 21.

New England and Atlante took quite different paths to reach the SuperLiga 2008 semifinals.

The Revolution finished atop Group B with a 2-0-1 record for seven points, making them the only defeated team in the competition. New England earned a pair of 1-0, shutout victories in Foxboro over Mexican clubs Santos Laguna, then earned a draw at MLS rival Chivas USA.

Atlante (2-1-0) was soundly defeated by the Houston Dynamo in its opening Group A game, 4-0, immediately giving the club long odds to advance to the semifinal stage. However, Atlante then defeated D.C. United, 3-2, at RFK Stadium, before overcoming fellow Mexican club, CD Guadalajara, 2-0, in the final group game to create a three-way tie atop the group between Houston, Atlante and CD Guadalajara. Houston won the group on goal differential, while Atlante advanced based on its head-to-head victory over CD Guadalajara.

Other than in Houston, where there is a extensive Mexican base in population with an average attendance of 20,914, the SuperLiga series has been met with yawns by American soccer fans - New England averaging 9,866 for its two home matches, D.C. United averaging 15,823 for three matches and Chivas averaging 15,436 for two matches.
